Berkeley Mentor Collective

Become a mentor to a first-generation student

It’s your time to shine and use the power of being you. Mentoring is about listening, sharing your experiences, offering resources, and empowering first-generation students as they find their way as a Golden Bear. It’s also a role that as you give, gives back to you in communication and interpersonal skills.

Mentor Criteria

  • Undergraduate student in the second year or longer at Berkeley
  • Interest in making a lasting impact on a fellow student
  • Supportive listener
  • Willing to share your own experiences and tips
  • Persistence and resilience skills
  • Knowledge of campus resources
  • Understanding and sensitivity toward the first-generation experience

How does it work?

Using a platform called Mentor Collective, student mentors are matched with a first-generation student at Berkeley for the 2024-2025 academic year. Mentors and mentees meet online or in-person at least five hours a month.

Following each meeting, mentors note in the platform how the meetings are going and can flag larger concerns like housing, security, or financial aid to Student Affairs Staff.

Give and Get

Giving your time will make a remarkable difference for another student on their journey at Berkeley. In addition to feeling great, having fun, and enhancing your own skills, you’ll also receive a certificate of achievement from the Dean of Students office acknowledging your outstanding contribution which can be added to your resume. Additionally, students who sign up to mentor will get a chance to win one of four $25 gift cards in a raffle.
