National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Recruitment Information
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the umbrella organization for the nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities. The UC Berkeley Chapter of NPHC was chartered in 1985 by representatives of the Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLO). Through NPHC, fraternities and sororities work together to promote unity, share ideas, and discuss common goals or problems; however, the ultimate mission of all NPHC organizations is public service.
Recruitment and membership intake for the organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council may vary differently between each of the Divine Nine organizations. Those interested in learning more about these Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities are encouraged to research the history of each organization, visit their National website, learn of their respective membership requirements, and develop a relationship with the chapter members of your organizational interest. To any extent beyond that, membership recruitment and intake is under full coordination of the specific chapter and their national organization. However, all membership intake processes must be conducted by a chapter that is both active with its national organization and recognized by the UC Berkeley campus.

NPHC Recruitment FAQs
In regards to Recruitment and Intake, does the NPHC condone hazing?
Members of the council agree to abide by regulations of UC Berkeley regarding student organizations: “We will not haze according to California State Law; we will not restrict membership based upon race, color, national origin, religion, sex, physical and mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship or status as a covered veteran (special disabled veteran, Vietnam-era veteran or any other veteran who served on active duty during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized).”
In direct reflection of the NPHC Joint Position Statement: “Be it further resolved, restated and made known that these NPHC organizations are committed to eradicate the scourge of hazing and to that end, [the] intake process has been re-codified by each organization, which permits the conduct of intake only when specifically authorized by the officer placed in charge of the process and at only such times, places and in the presence of persons specifically authorized and certified to conduct the intake process.”
Does the formation of a campus NPHC segregate according to race?
The NPHC and each of its member organizations have non-discriminatory policies and practices. They are also actively involved in activities and programs designed to eradicate bias and discrimination in all phases of life. The formation of an NPHC council ensures that the philosophies of affiliate member organizations are maintained. It is important and highly recommended that NPHC councils seek to influence other organizations through its programming and activities.
