THANKS TO BERKELEY….
SUPPORT YOUR LEGACY, OUR MISSION, AND THE FUTURE OF YOUR UNDERGRADUATE BROTHERS AND SISTERS
Nearly 140 years ago the first fraternity was established on what was then the Berkeley campus of the University of California. This was the first fraternity community west of the Rockies and established a tradition of excellence and innovation that continues today, including the first purpose-built fraternity house in the country, the first sorority chapter west of the Rockies (and only second west of the Mississippi), the home of the first Asian-American fraternity in the U.S.A., and the founding home of Sigma Chi Fraternity’s national Derby Days philanthropic effort. Most recently, the Cal fraternity & sorority community became the first in the nation to partner with their host city and American Red Cross to provide disaster preparedness training and equipment to use in the case of an earthquake.
As the fraternity & sorority community heads towards our 140th anniversary in 2010, we also celebrate the legacy of the men and women of the past while looking to support the 2,500 undergraduates who make up the fraternity and sorority chapters in today’s CalGreeks community. Through your study and involvement with CalGreeks, you remain a part of this community today.
In honor of the 140th anniversary, please consider giving back to the fraternity & sorority community to continue the legacy of the men and women – your interfraternal brothers and sisters who came before you – while supporting the educational opportunities of today’s students. Whether it be with $250 or $25, every gift counts! As you know, membership in a Greek-letter organization offers students an opportunity to develop leadership and community-building skills within their chapters. With our myriad of chapters representing a broad array of interests and each having a unique identity, our fraternity and sorority chapters play a critical role in shaping our students. In many cases, the organization becomes a type of family helping students build strong relationships and connections to each other and to campus. It is an important and transformational experience for most participatants. With your help, we can continue to strengthen and improve this experience for all members. As you determine your gifts to the University of California, Berkeley, please consider designating Fraternity & Sorority Life for your contribution.
Since Fraternity & Sorority Life programs and services are made possible almost entirely through gifts, your financial support is very important in enabling us to continue the important efforts that helped you as a student. Your gift will help support today’s students through funding for leadership development, program support , and the Learning Continuum. The Cal Fraternity & Sorority Life Learning Continuum is a new series of distinct and progressive opportunities aimed at teaching and reinforcing fraternity/sorority values to community members from the day they join a chapter. Through self-discovery, analysis, and interaction, participants develop skills necessary to lead balanced lives and to continue leading the fraternity world.
Continuing the theme that fraternity/sorority membership is for life, we have also developed a number of Activities for Alumni to stay connected with the CalGreeks community such as an offsite reception during the summer at a San Francisco Giants baseball game in 2009, a reception before Homecoming 2009, regional receptions throughout the country (St. Louis, MO; Denver, CO; and Seattle, WA), and an annual fraternity & sorority life report specifically for alumni.
Thanks in anticipation of your gift, no matter the size. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at one of our events either on campus, in the Bay Area, or across the country.
Dr. Grahaeme A. Hesp
Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life
